Your business card still does more work than your website. Here's how to make it count.

Two color business cards

A business card still earns its place because it does the one thing your website can't: it puts your name in someone's hand at the moment they've just decided they might want you. Your site waits for people to remember you and go looking. A card skips that step. The trick is making sure the card now sitting in their pocket actually reads like a business worth calling.

Here's what separates a card that gets kept from one that gets tossed.

The card is a stand-in for you

When you're not in the room, the card is. Someone pulls it out of a drawer three weeks later and decides, in about two seconds, whether you look like a real business. Almost all of that judgment comes from how the card feels and how easy it is to act on — not from a clever design.

Spend on the stock before the flourishes

If you get only one thing right, make it the paper. A thin, flimsy card signals a thin, flimsy operation; a heavier stock feels like a company that's been around. Foil, spot gloss, and rounded corners are nice, but they're the last dollars to spend, not the first. We'll tell you when a finish is worth it and when it's just adding cost — most of the time, a good weight with a clean matte or gloss does everything you need.

Make it stupidly easy to act on

The most common mistake we see is a card you can't actually use. Type big enough to read without glasses. One phone number or email that you actually check. If someone has to squint, or guess which of four contact methods is real, the card has already failed. White space isn't wasted space — it's what makes the one thing you want them to do obvious.

Order more than you think

The last failure is the quiet one: you order a small box, hand them out carefully because you're worried about running out, and the card that was supposed to be everywhere ends up in a drawer. Cards cost the least per piece when you print more at once, and they don't expire. Order enough that you can be generous with them.

When you're ready, you can price a box on our site in about a minute — pick the stock, the finish, and the quantity, and the number updates as you go.
